Do I need a referral to see a psychologist? No, you don’t need a referral to book a session. But if you want to access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, psychiatrist, or pediatrician.
-
How do Medicare rebates work? With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year. We can process your rebate after your session, and Medicare will deposit it straight into your account.
-
Can I use private health insurance for psychology sessions?Yes, many private health insurers offer rebates for psychology services under Extras cover. Since coverage varies, it's best to check with your provider to see what’s included in your plan.
-
Does Equal Psychology accept NDIS clients?Yes! We work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants, aged 18+. If you’re unsure whether psychology is covered in your plan, check with your NDIS planner or support coordinator.
-
Are sessions covered by WorkCover or TAC?Yes, we provide psychology services for WorkCover and TAC clients. You’ll need an approved claim number before booking, and sessions must be pre-approved by WorkCover or TAC. If you’re unsure how this works, feel free to reach out.
-
What is your cancellation policy?Life happens—we get it. If you need to cancel or reschedule, we ask for at least 24 hours' notice to avoid a fee. Late cancellations within 24 hours will be charged the full session fee. Missed appointments (no-shows) are also charged at the full fee. Unfortunately, Medicare and private health insurance don’t cover missed appointments.
-
Do you offer telehealth sessions?Yes! We offer video and phone sessions, which are eligible for Medicare rebates if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Some private health insurers also cover telehealth—check with your provider to see if it’s included.
-
How are payments processed? All privately funded sessions are paid on the day of your appointment via credit/debit card. If you’re eligible for Medicare rebates, we process them for you right after your session.
-
Can I bring a support person to my session?Absolutely. If having someone with you makes the session feel more comfortable, you’re welcome to bring a support person. Just let us know in advance so we can accommodate.
-
What if I’m unsure about therapy and just want to see if it’s right for me?We get it—starting therapy can feel like a big step. That’s why we offer a Meet & Greet session—a 15-minute, no-pressure chat where you can ask questions and see if we’re the right fit for you.
